Communters in New York were surprised today by a free edition of The New York Times. Something was up, because it was a lot thinner than normal. Another clue is that it’s dated July 4, 2009, and full of articles talking about a future where Gitmo is closing, oil companies are nationalized, and the National Health Insurance Act passes. This NYTimes Special Edition did a good job mimicking the paper and web versions.
- Because of slow download times, here’s a screenshot of the site (PNG, 1.4 MB);
- I have a copy of the paper version as well (PDF, 8.2 MB).
Word on the street is The Yes Men are somehow involved.
(14 november) It’s been confirmed that this optimistic parody was the work of none other that The Yes Men. They’ve have shared the story of their plan on their website. There is even a video describing their tale.
