Al bij al duurde het een klein uurtje om de 68.4 MB upgrade van SP3 te downloaden over onze trage adsl verbinding, een automatische back-up te maken van de systeeminstellingen, de installatie zelf te laten uitvoeren, en alles terug aan de praat te krijgen. Net lang genoeg dus om te zien hoe Starbuck haar broodrooster afrost en Baltar eindelijk nog eens een goed pak slaag krijgt. Frak yeah!

Tijdens de download en installatie begon een aantal beveiligingsprogramma’s hevig te flikkeren alsof ze in Maastricht bollen hadden gekocht. De Comodo firewall wou dolgraag overschakelen op installation mode, en bij iedere aanpassing aan de system registry kreeg ik een melding van Spybot. Niks echt abnormaal. Misschien alleen een beetje security overkill van mijnentwege.

Na de verplichte reboot lijkt alles op het eerste zicht nog steeds te werken. Mijn alternatieve desktop shell doet gelukkig niet vreemd, de verbinding met zowel ons draadloze internet als dat van de buren is in orde, en na een volledige defrag verwacht ik de eerste tekenen te merken van die aangekondigde verbeterde prestaties.

De upgrade van Ubuntu die ik eergisteren uitvoerde was eigenlijk nog eenvoudiger: van Gutsy Gibon 7.10 naar Hardy Heron 8.04 ging bijzonder vlot. De live cd die ik op de release party in Herk-de-Stad had meegekregen deed het prima en eigenlijk moet je gewoon de online upgrade gids volgen. Wat nog niet wil lukken is verbinding maken met het netwerk, maar wat dat probleempje betreft kan ik misschien eventjes beroep doen op Bart of Peter. Toch?

9 mei: Zelf nog geen last gehad, maar blijkbaar zijn er toch heel wat mensen die een probleem hebben met de upgrade. En eigenlijk staat de Windows XP nieuwsgroep er vol van.

Wist je dat je automatisch op de hoogte kan blijven van de laatste nieuwtjes op dit log? Heel eenvoudig: kies of je de nieuwste berichten wil ontvangen in je e-mail of via de RSS feed. In ieder geval bedankt voor je bezoek en nog veel leesplezier!

Nog dertig minuten en dan zal de wereld weten wat nu precies die Dragonfly is waar Opera al maanden zo mysterieus over doet. Sommigen beweren dat het zou gaan om een web development tool, vergelijkbaar met Firebug voor Firefox. Anderen schrijven dan weer dat het misschien een concurrent zou kunnen worden voor Mozilla Prism, Microsoft Silverlight en Adobe Air.

Persoonlijk zou ik vooral graag hebben dat er tenminste meer compatibiliteit komt met enkele features van CSS3. Border-radius en column-count bijvoorbeeld, daar zou ik al heel erg blij mee zijn.

Opera gebruikers vormen slechts 4% van mijn bezoekers. Toch zou het fijn zijn moest iedereen hetzelfde design te zien krijgen. Sommige details blijven momenteel voorbehouden voor de gebruikers van Firefox en Safari. Het zou fijn zijn moest Opera afstand nemen van Internet Explorer en zich bij het gepriviligeerde groepje voegen.

Gisterenochtend was het nog eens tijd om m’n burgerplicht te vervullen: met de fiets naar de sporthal, nergens aanschuiven, en zonder problemen m’n keuzes aanduiden op het computerscherm. Alles samen duurde het stemmen niet langer dan vijf minuten. That’s democrazy for yah! Ik had me voorgenomen geen hele dag te ’staren’ naar die hele hype op de VRT, maar per ongeluk gebeurde het toch: zo kwam Ivan Devadder om de tien minuten in beeld en verkondigde enthousiast dat er nog niets te verkondigen viel!

Naargelang de avond vorderde werd stilaan duidelijk op welke manier de bevolking de kaarten had geschud. Van alle progressieve partijen ging enkel Groen! vooruit, terwijl de socialisten ook in Wallonië verlies leden. Dat ziet er dus niet zo rooskleurig uit voor de linkse kiezer in dit land; in de buitenlandse pers zal dan waarschijnlijk weer uitsluitend sprake zijn van een ruk naar rechts. Welke regering gaat dat geven? Sommige commentatoren spreken al enkele maanden van een klassieke tripartite, maar volgens mij zou het voor de SP.a strategisch beter zijn om enkele jaren in de oppositie te gaan, hoe spijtig dat ook klinkt. Een rooms-blauwe coalitie moet dan maar zien wat er van de aangekondigde staatshervorming komt, en De Gucht en Dewael die goede rapporten kregen krijgen alsnog een kans om verder te doen.

Veel werk zullen onze nieuwbakken politiekers thans nog niet hebben. Als ik mij niet vergis mogen zij straks hun nieuwe job beginnen met enkele maanden betaald zomerverlof. Zo wil ik ook wel aan mijn nieuwe job beginnen. (Opvallend overigens hoe sommige anders a-politieke weblogs opeens ook interesse vertonen voor de Belgische politiek. Er moet al iets uitzonderlijks gebeuren om die overmorgen al niet te zijn vergeten. Die kans zit er dik in, want vanavond stelt Apple enkele nieuwe producten voor op WWDC en dat vraagt om schaamteloze linkhoererij.)

18u00: Zoals verwacht stapt Johan Vandelanotte op als voorzitter dan de SP.a na de teleurstellende resultaten van gisteren. Spijtig. Hij zou wel nog deelnemen aan de onderhandelingen en staatshervorming, maar geeft eind oktober het voorzitterschap door. Men lijkt Caroline Gennez uit Mechelen naar voor te schuiven als opvolgster, maar we zullen nog wel zien hoe dat verder verloopt. Stevenote gaat overigens binnen een uurtje beginnen, live te volgen bij Engadget en Gizmodo.

21u50: Het post-electoraal verkiezingsdebat op Canvas was wel de moeite. De leiders van alle partijen samen aan één tafel terwijl ze het nieuwe België bespraken. Toch boeiend hoe meningen kunnen veranderen, 24 uren voor en na een verkiezing. Bart Somers is een overigens kieken, maar dat wist u waarschijnlijk al. En Safari for Windows is maar brol.

With over 1 billion users globally, the internet theoretically forms the third largest country in the world. My guess is only a very small percentage of those users ever look beyond the default settings their computer comes delivered with. In this article, I’d like to share with you five ways in which I have personalised my own internet experience over the years. Please keep in mind I’m talking about my own personal experiences here, and am in no way trying to make you purchase anything — everything I’m linking to in this article is available for free anyway.

1. Mozilla Firefox

Although Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is still the most used browser around, Mozilla’s Firefox has been able to gain a market-share of up to around 20 percent nowadays.¹ Firefox has quite a number of advantageous features: fast page construction, very good security, tabbed browsing, themes, etc.

These days, innovative features like tabbed browsing have become a standard for most other browsers as well, but because of it’s level of customization, I chose Firefox for my online endeavours. With a few simple clicks you can add extra search engines like YouTube, Wikipedia (in your own language or any of the 250 other ones), Flickr, Google Images, or even the BSG wiki. Firefox also allows the installation of extensions, which can greatly enhance your user experience and are kept up-to-date almost automatically. More on this later.

2. Web-based Applications?

One of the most obvious trends in recent years is the emergence of web-based applications. Things as simple as a calender, and as impressive as online radio stations or advanced image editors are now accessible from any connected computer. Ever since Google launched its Calendar last year, I’ve been eagerly using it to keep track of all my appointments. GCal makes it really easy to manage my schedule of all those promising job interviews. And the free sms service that sends you a free sms reminder when you have a new upcoming event is a nice touch.

More or less the same applies to Gmail: after it’s introduction in 2004, I switched over from Hotmail (2 MB inbox) to Gmail (2 GB inbox) and haven’t looked back since. Of course, e-mail has been available online for a relatively long time already, so to some people this service may not seem so innovative anymore.

One service that holds somewhat of a middle ground is the Google Reader, a web-based RSS reader that allows you to keep track of your feeds without too much problems, but also provides sharing functions and readership trends. I still know a lot of people who like to keep track of their news with “offline”, installed software. But personally, I feel that if you’re away from home for a couple of days each week, having your feeds available and up-to-date wherever you go is much more convenient.

Now before you all start branding me a Google Evangelist, I’d better mention some other good applications as well: the online radio stations Pandora (unfortunately terminated outside US/UK, but you can proxy² ) and Last.fm (if you love to share), online television station Joost, and online image editor Picnik. Those are all great services, and they only need an internet connection to work. No software to install equals more free space on my harddrive.

3. Firefox Extensions

Now that the groundworks for my explanation have been laid, I can continue discussing those Firefox extensions I mentioned earlier without confusing anyone. Mozilla makes it easy for anyone to install extensions: you just go to their website, select the add-on you would like to have and click install. Downloads automatically. Did I already mention you never have to pay for these expansions? So why hesitate…? Well, the hardest part is actually figuring out which extensions you actually need.

For me, using the internet without such extensions as Fasterfox or Customize Google, and the many notifiers for services like Gmail and GReader, we cost me a lot time I could be spending on other topics. No more clicking and checking all the time, just sit back and your notifier will automatically inform you when a new e-mail is waiting for you. Since I’m an avid user of Gmail, I greatly enjoy Better GMail which provides loads of extra possibilities for managing your e-mail: coloured labels, attachment icons, skinning, etc. Another great find was Stylish, especially in combination with the GReader theme by Hicks Design — I warmly recommend this one (try it, Joke).

And last but not least, there is Greasemonkey.³

4. Greasemonkey

According to the description on their website, Greasemonkey “allows you to customize the way web pages look and function” by using small bits of JavaScript. Hundreds of scripts are already available for free at Userscript.org. And if you’re the tinkerer sort, you can also write your own userscript.

One of the most useful scripts I use is a little Ads Remover that has been installed nearly 17 000 times and hands you back more of that precious on-screen real estate by removing ads from the pages you view. Another scripts that proves itself useful to me on a daily basis is Download Video (installed 50k times) which provides an easy link for downloading videos from most big video websites such as YouTube for example, and Protect Textarea which protects you from closing a tab/window when there is still unsubmitted text that could be lost. Very handy for people who don’t want to lose that excellent post they just wrote by mistakenly clicking the wrong button. ()

5. Internet television

My fifth and final item of this top five concerns something completely different: television. Although I hardly ever watch it anymore, it still surprises me how little original and interesting content they are showing these days.⁴ No wonder I almost never watch it. Especially since I discovered what the internet has to offer.

Earlier, at number two, I mentioned Joost tv, but there are a lot of other good stations out there. My two most favourite examples are Tv-links and Alluc (thanks Charlotte). Not only do these communities contain most of my favourite tv series and new films, I don’t have to download anything in order to start watching. In other words: you only have to wait a minute or two for the buffer to load, and then you can lean back and enjoy the show. In two weeks I was able to watch all three seasons of ‘Battlestar Galactica’, which was a hugely better experience than tv could ever provide. I also remember watching ‘Happy Feet’ weeks before it was premièred in Belgium.

Some sites have specialised in particular content. There’s iFilm, which provides daily updates of Comedy Central. ‘The Colbert Report’ is hilarious if you follow US politics a little. If you are into ‘South Park’, then I recommend AllSP.com, which has all 11 seasons of the satirical cartoon, and usually features the newest episode only a couple of hours after it’s been shown on regular television. No hours of waiting, accesible anywhere, … me likes! No wonder the global bandwith is almost monopolised by video content.

Vanavond is er over de plas een grote computerconferentie van start gegaan. Baas van Apple Steve Jobs kwam er zijn jaarlijkse keynote geven. Nieuw duur speelgoed zoals de iPhone wordt er voorgesteld. (Knap ding, maar kost stukken van mensen.) Normaalgezien is er bij zo’n gebeuren altijd een live stream beschikbaar, maar dit jaar spijtig genoeg niet meer. Te duur waarschijnlijk. Een enkele website beloofde live beelden, maar dat ging dus even niet door en er bleken enkel tekstversies — met hier en daar een foto — van het gebeuren beschikbaar.

Mij niet gelaten, ik kan wel eventjes wachten. Maar als dan achteraf, vijf uren na de presentatie, alle computerservers nog steeds platliggen dan is dat toch teveel van het goede. Al een geluk dat tussen die Diggers zo’n slimme mensen zitten: open Quicktime, open url en plak deze link. Geef nu toe, da’s toch beter dan zo’n tekststream.

One More Thing… Steve heeft blijkbaar zijn traditionele “one more thing” geschrapt. Nah das ist aber schade…

10 januari: Bij CNET staan twee samenvattingen van elk een minuut of zeven die je alvast een betrouwbare eerste indruk geven. ‘t Is wel vré duur spul.

13 januari: Zoals verwacht loopt de introductie niet van een leien dakje: problemen met de naam, het design, en de uitbreidingsmogelijkheden. Dacht ik het niet: te mooi om waar te zijn.

Sinds een maand ongeveer gebruik ik de Google Reader om mijn feeds te beheren. Voordien werden mijn feeds opgeslagen bij Bloglines, maar daar had ik de laatste tijd niet meer zo’n goede ervaringen mee. Dan maar alle feeds exporteren en elders opnieuw importeren — fluitje van een cent.

Vandaag merk ik dat er een nieuwe feature beschikbaar is: Google Reader Trends. Voor mensen die iedere dag zo’n feedreader gebruiken is dit een bijzonder handige tool. Zo zie je bijvoorbeeld meteen welke RSS feeds je het vaakst leest. De drie hoofdonderdelen van Google Reader Trends zijn:

1. een staafgrafiek met je gelezen items per maand, week, of uur van de dag;
2. “reading trends” voor de laatste 30 dagen, net als “starred” en “shared” berichten;
3. “subscription trends” die je leestrends en inactieve feeds opsomt.

Waar ik tot nu toe het meeste voordeel uit haalde was de lijst met inactieve feeds. Blijkbaar zat die nog vol vervallen rommel, want ondertussen zijn al een stuk of tien feeds eruit gevlogen. Wat ik wel spijtig vind is dat je de tabellen niet kan hersorteren, zodat je bijvoorbeeld een overzicht krijgt van het % gelezen feeds in plaats van het aantal. Dat lijkt imho een betere manier om zo’n statistieken weer te geven.

Tot slot nog even de samenvatting van mijn eigen feedlezer meegeven: “From your 115 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 2.763 items, starred 20 items, and shared 1 items.” Bijna drieduizend gelezen artikels per maand, dat lijkt me meer dan genoeg. :)
